The standard was proposed for revision in 2022 at the annual meeting of the ISO/TC17/SC12 Steel/Continuously Rolled Flat Products Sub-Committee, and was formally launched in March 2023. The drafting working group lasted two and a half years, during which one working group meeting and two annual meetings were held for intense discussions, and in April 2025, the sixth edition of the revised standard ISO 4997:2025 “Structural Grade Cold Rolled Carbon Thin Steel Plate” was ushered in.
This standard is another international standard revision led by China after China took over the chairmanship of ISO/TC17/SC12. The release of ISO 4997:2025 is another breakthrough in China's participation in international standardization work in the field of steel plates and strips after ISO 8353:2024.
Carbon structural steel cold rolled steel plate and strip products have been committed to improving strength and reducing thickness, thereby reducing the weight of end products, achieving the ultimate goal of energy saving and emission reduction, and realizing the production concept of “green steel”. 2015 version of the standard for the market's most widely used yield strength of 280MPa steel grades are not stipulated. In addition, the technical contents of the standard, such as surface roughness and batch weight, do not meet the actual needs of current production. In order to further enhance the applicability of the standard, the Metallurgical Industry Information Standards Research Institute organized Anshan Iron & Steel Co. to apply for a new international standard work project for this product. In the process of revision, the technical requirements of the new grade were determined in consultation with experts from Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom for many times, striving to meet the requirements of production and inspection in each country and expanding the scope of application of the standard.The release of ISO 4997:2025 “Structural Grade Cold-Rolled Carbon Thin Steel Plate” pushes the new grades and standards researched and developed by China to the world.
