The primary difference between galvanized steel sheets and aluminum-zinc alloy coated steel sheets lies in their coatings. The surface of a galvanized steel sheet is uniformly covered with a layer of zinc material, which provides cathodic protection to the base metal. This means that the zinc material undergoes sacrificial corrosion to protect the base metal, and only when all the zinc has corroded will the base metal be damaged.
The surface coating of an Galvalume Steel Coils consists of 55% aluminum, 43.5% zinc, and a small amount of other elements. Under a microscope, the coating surface appears as a honeycomb structure, with aluminum forming the "honeycomb" cells that enclose the zinc. In this case, although the aluminum-zinc coating also provides cathodic protection, the reduction in zinc content and the fact that the zinc is encapsulated by aluminum make it less prone to electrolysis, thereby significantly reducing its cathodic protection effect. Consequently, once an aluminum-zinc alloy coated steel sheet is cut, the cut edges quickly lose their protection and are prone to rusting. Therefore, cutting of Galvalume Steel Coils should be minimized, and if cutting is necessary, the edges should be protected with anti-rust paint or zinc-rich paint to extend the service life of the sheet.
